Pillars in Life.
Apr 04, 2019There are so many pillars in your life. These are guide posts, events, occurrences that are like a stake in the ground for you... where there is no turning back. Those monumental things that formed your compass, sometimes unknowingly.
We all talk about chapters in life and closing the pages on different chapters, but let's talk briefly about the pillars.
Here is an exercise to help jog your memory!
Grab a piece of paper and turn it horizontal, draw a line through the middle from end to end. We are going to make a time line. It doesn't have to look like Ben's below, but I added it as a visual none-the-less.
I want you to start at birth. What are things that you remember that your parents or siblings told you about your childhood? Where were you born?
Work your way up and think of your earliest memories.
What are significant things that happened in your life?
Did you move?
Did you meet certain friends?
What was school like?
Did you gain a new sibling?
What was your life like?
*Quick Story: I learned from a leader, who was very much into psychology, that the years between 6-10 are called the "Foot Print" years. These are the years that children develop their emotions and the groundwork for how they will be as adults. The things that happen to them during these years are some of their first most significant memories.... Of course people continue to grow and change, but these are incredibly formative years.... She gave an example of how there was a gentleman she worked with, that was always insecure and felt that he was not receiving enough attention for his work. After meeting weekly with him, she asked him what his life was like between the ages of 6-10? He told her, with a laugh that they were tough... because his parents unexpectedly got pregnant with twins and after being the only child for so long... he had two siblings to compete with (for attention). This was a lightbulb and just talking through this with him, shined a light into why he might be sensitive and seek added attention.*
After you write out all your "pillars", think about the themes of these pillars, how did you feel? If you were to assign a "theme" to your pillar, what would it be?
This exercise will be different for everyone, it can be amazing to reflect on yourself.... it might be interesting what you learn!
