My Interview with a LinkedIn Expert

Oct 16, 2023

By Nancy Evans

We all want more success, but it’s sometimes hard to know the right moves to take. That’s another reason I’m so grateful for my husband, Scott Aaron. He’s talented at many things in business and the go-to LinkedIn expert with all the answers.

So in this article, I’ll share his best tips about LinkedIn, where he’s a true expert. If you're looking to enhance your networking and marketing skills or if you're on a mission to level up your entrepreneurial journey, this discussion is for you.

Why LinkedIn

LinkedIn is undoubtedly one of the most powerful platforms for making authentic connections, generating leads, and finding valuable business partners. So Scott shared some invaluable insights and tips on how to leverage LinkedIn effectively.

In this unscripted conversation, I'll ask Scott some burning questions about LinkedIn and its potential for business growth. We'll cover topics ranging from content creation to optimizing your LinkedIn profile.

How Often Should You Post on LinkedIn?

To kick things off, I asked Scott about the optimal posting frequency for someone just starting on LinkedIn. Scott wisely cautioned against overcommitting, a common pitfall. It's easy to get carried away with enthusiasm, but consistency is key. Try a simple and manageable approach: three posts a week – one on Monday, one on Wednesday, and one on Friday.

Let’s look at what he does…

Scott's content strategy includes a variety of posts, starting with a short 30 to 60-second tip video on Mondays. Video content is incredibly effective, as it allows your audience to hear and see you, creating a closer connection. On Wednesdays, he suggests conducting a LinkedIn poll to gather market research on common pain points, which can be a goldmine for content ideas. Finally, Fridays are reserved for informative posts based on the poll results. This structured approach helps create a rhythm and ensures that you consistently provide value to your network.

Should You Include Links in Your Posts?

Scott shared valuable insights when it comes to including links in your LinkedIn posts. While there are differing opinions on this, Scott advises caution. Directly adding links in the body of your post might not be the best approach. LinkedIn tends to favor posts that keep users on the platform.

However, you can strategically place links in the description or direct users to your LinkedIn profile for more information. It's all about striking a balance between sharing valuable content and adhering to LinkedIn's guidelines.

The Power of LinkedIn Newsletters

LinkedIn newsletters are a powerful tool for building your reputation and delivering industry-specific content. Scott recommends creating newsletters with clear, concise, and SEO titles. The key is to let potential subscribers know what they'll gain from subscribing to your newsletter.

With newsletters, LinkedIn automatically invites your first-degree connections to subscribe. Additionally, every new connection you make will receive a notification encouraging them to subscribe. This makes growing your subscriber base an organic process.

Unlocking the Potential of Creator Mode

Switching to creator mode on LinkedIn offers several advantages. First, it replaces your profile's “Connect" button with a "Follow" button, helping you build a following without cluttering your connections. It also provides protection against spammy connection requests.

Second, creator mode grants access to essential LinkedIn features like the notification bell and a clickable link in your profile. This link can drive traffic to external content or websites, boosting your visibility and engagement.

How to do it: To access creator tools like LinkedIn Live and newsletters, you need a minimum of 150 connections or followers. These tools can be game-changers for content creators, coaches, consultants, and anyone looking to expand their reach on LinkedIn.

Creating Engaging Video Content

Video content is a must on LinkedIn, but how do you get started? Scott recommends keeping it simple and starting with your mobile device. Record a 30 to 60-second tip video, ensuring good lighting and audio quality. After recording, save it to your camera roll and upload it directly to LinkedIn through the app.

Don't overthink it; just provide value and ask for comments to spark engagement.

For longer content, Scott suggests keeping videos between two to four minutes to maintain your audience's attention. If your content goes beyond that, consider using LinkedIn Live to keep viewers engaged.

A Marketing Goldmine

LinkedIn is a goldmine for professionals and entrepreneurs when used strategically. Scott's insights and tips provide a roadmap to fully harness the platform's potential. Remember to stay consistent, provide value, and use LinkedIn's features wisely to supercharge your networking and marketing efforts.
