Gaping Holes.
Jun 01, 2020The last 3 months have been nothing short of… unreal.
After being locked inside for quite a while, I have been grateful for the peace and serenity that comes from slowing down for a bit.. I never watch the news, however since being quarantined out of sheer curiosity of the outside world, I have asked Alexa each morning “Alexa, what is going on in the news”… and she will launch the latest edition of NPR news.
Some things seem so glaring in the last few months…
So many people are living paycheck to paycheck in the United States… so many are JUST getting by. For a “land of opportunity” this is sad and something needs to be done to support the working class. In fact according to USA Today, the average American is struggling to make ends meet each month, over half of the population saying they live paycheck to paycheck. You can imagine what this pandemic has done...
I remember reading a sociology paper about 6 years ago, about how people get “stuck” in working a low income job, barely getting by. Basically in a nutshell, out of necessity you get a job earning minimum wage. You start doing that job and try to rack up as many hours as possible, while trying to pay bills and bring money in. Eventually, you are working ridiculous hours, burnt out, still barely getting by, but you are too tired to take the time to try to get a new job. There is obviously more to this article, but this is happening all too frequently and the minimum wage has not risen enough to consistently support the average cost of living.
I recently did a podcast interview with a business owner in Australia and he said "I don't understand why Americans are always BUSY? This is not a life to live". It really made me think, because this is the American norm.... but does it really need to be??
Another thing that is so incredibly embarrassing…. Sad…. Disappointing… and unfair is the racial disparity that we have in our country. This is absolutely unacceptable and we need to be better as a county to embrace this truth and take major action to improve.
Having an HR background, I often think about the facts of a situation…. So many things happening lately, just plain don’t add up.
Let’s be better.
P.S. I will most certainly be voting… This is #unsettling.
