Create a Simple Business Statement

A simple business statement is one to two sentences explaining what you do in a short and concise way. In Donald Miller and Dr. J.J. Peterson’s book, Marketing Made Simple, they call this a “one-liner”. When your audience visits your social media, they should understand what you do and who you help as a coach or consultant. Human attention spans are shorter than goldfish these days, so we want to create something nice and compact that will draw your ideal audience in.
Goal: To be able to clearly explain what you do, who you help, and your benefit, in one to two sentences.
Why is this important?: This simple business statement can be used to explain what you do quickly in many different situations and give your audience a short and sweet overview of what you do and leave your ideal audience wanting to learn more.

- Networking Events
- Business Cards
- Promotional Content
- Website and more!
Use the following exercise to create a business statement that feels good to you.
Exercise: Set a timer for 30 minutes and brainstorm around the following questions.
- Who are you? (Business name or your personal name)
- Who do you do it for? Who are you helping?
- What do you do in your business? What problem do you solve for your clients?
- How do you do it? How are you going to help them (specifically)?
- How does it help them? What’s the success? The outcome?
Example: BYOB Agency is a social media agency that helps entrepreneurs build their personal brands online. We repurpose and deliver your content so you can show up authentically and consistently online and grow your business.
Write a few examples below sharing what it is that you do.
