Are You Living in Cause or Effect?

"Excuses are tools for the incompetent" my boss said to me.

At the time I had been out of college for a couple of years and was learning how to navigate my new position as an HR executive. I was nervous, unsure, still learning and that quote, originally said by Barak Obama, hit me in the face *smack* right when I needed it.

My boss, who still to this day is an amazing friend and peer, delivered this message to me at a time when I absolutely needed to hear it. I was starting to make excuses for things, when I knew deep down inside, I just plain needed to take accountability for them and take action to fix them.

I changed that day.

Hearing that quote made me realize that making excuses were just a waste of time and quite honestly out of my character, as someone who truly strives to live with integrity. From that day forward, any time I went to make an excuse I thought about that quote and stopped in my tracks.

It is better to think of solutions and ideas to improve things, than to make excuses and perseverate on what is not working. This lesson has come back around many times in my entrepreneurial journey. Just think about how your boss feels... do you think they would rather have an executive coming to them all the time with problems? or someone who acknowledges what is not working and thinks of ways to improve?

To further this point, I became certified in NLP therapy last year and I learned that many people either live in "cause" or "effect".

People who live in "effect", live in "victim mode". When you live in "effect" you are always saying things like, "why do these things always happen to ME?" or "It doesn't matter, it's not going to work anyway".

Instead, try to be a person who lives in "cause". People who live in "cause" say things like, "this is not working, I wonder why, let's figure this out", "what can I do to improve so this doesn't happen again" or "this keeps happening, so let's figure out what we can do differently to prevent it in the future".

So I'd like to leave you with this question. Are you living in "cause" or "effect"? I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.
