9 Tips to Stay Focused…When You Just Can’t
Jul 04, 2022As humans, we are creative beings. As entrepreneurs, we are hyper creative beings. At times our wonderful brain can be so amazing and at times it can be a curse. One moment you are inspired and knocking things off your to do list, the next moment you have 20 tabs open and a huge case of "squirrel brain".
It's easy to get distracted when you are working on a project, but what if there was an easier way? I have compiled nine tips that will help you keep your head in the game!
Tip #1: Establish Clear Deadlines. Who doesn't like deadlines?! Set goals for yourself everyday with specific time frames.
Tip #2: Understand that you have a "monkey mind". According to many buddhist principles, your brain the “monkey mind” is a term that refers to being restless, confused, and unsettled. It is also part of your brain that becomes easily distracted, so if you want to stay focused and productive, your challenge will be to shut down the monkey mind. Being intentional about this can be very helpful.
Tip #3: Maintain a Routine. To stay focused, it is important to establish and maintain an effective routine that includes planning out your day ahead of time so you can get in the zone when necessary. EVERY single day, I wake up, brush my teeth, take the dogs for a walk, workout for 45 minutes, eat breakfast, shower than get to work! It's so key to have a set morning routine. It sets the tone for my day.
Tip #4: Define Your Goals and Strategies Ahead of Time. Before you start your work, organize it into a list or spreadsheet to keep track of what steps are necessary to complete your tasks in order from most important first, so that once you sit down at the computer, you know exactly where to begin.
Tip #5: Allow Yourself to Take Breaks. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is walk away from your desk and take a break. A five-minute coffee break, for example, can refresh your mind when it's getting tired or frustrated, as well as give you time to think about what tasks are left on your plate. I also love an afternoon nature walk to stay grounded.
Tip #6: Keep a "Done" List. The most motivating feeling is checking things off your to-do list, so keep track of what you've accomplished and congratulate yourself on the successes! It is important to celebrate the little wins along the way!
Tip #7: Get an Accountability Partner. It might sound silly, but I love having a buddy to help hold me accountable to my tasks. I love the website: focusmate.com. It allows you to choose a time slot (50 minute intervals) in which you and another person who are trying to get something done in that time frame will start together, set intentions then reconvene at the end of the 50 minutes to see how you made out.
Tip #8: Close the Tabs. If you find yourself scrolling and opening tons of tabs or windows on your computer. Stop what you are doing and close all of them out except for the one that you really need to work in. Sometimes you need to hone it in and refocus.
Tip #9: Try the Pomodoro Technique. The technique basically entails working for 25 minutes and taking a five minute break, then repeating that process four times before resting or taking on anything else. There is an app called "Forest" that even grows a small shrub if you can stay focused, not answer calls and stay on track.
In conclusion, it can be tough to stay focused and on track each day. Take it from me, some of the tips I have mentioned have been complete GAME CHANGERS for me and have made all the difference in my entrepreneurial journey.
